The formula of average speed is,

average \: speed \: = \frac{total \: distance}{total \: time}

Now total distance covered by car A in 3 hours will be,

= (40)(3) = 120 km

And total distance covered by car B in 3 hours will be,

= (50)(3) = 150 km

Thus, car B is 150-120 = 30 km ahead from car A.

Answer: 30 km
