Given :- Two cars A and B, which are 500 km apart, start moving towards each other on a straight road at a certain point of time. The speed of car A is 57 km/hr and that of car B is 40 km/hr. After first hour car A which is moving from west to east takes a left turn, runs for 40 minutes and reaches point K whereas the other car which was moving from east to west, keeps running on the road till 1.5 hours and then takes a left turn, runs for half an hour and reaches point L .
To Find :- What is the difference between the vertical and horizontal distances between the two points K and L ?
Solution :-
→ Speed of car A = 57 km/h
and,
→ Car A travel straight for = 1 hour .
so,
→ Distance covered by car A = S * T = 57 * 1 = 57 km .
and,
→ Speed of car B = 40 km/h
and,
→ Car B travel straight for = 1.5 hour .
so,
→ Distance covered by car B = S * T = 40 * 1.5 = 60 km .
now,
→ Total distance between initial points = 500 km.
then,
→ Horizontal distance between both cars before turn = 500 - (57 + 60) = 500 - 117 = 383 km.
now, car A facing east turns left (North) and runs for 40 min and reach at point K .
so,
→ Distance covered by car A = S * T = 57 * (40/60) = 57 * (2/3) = 38 km .
and, car B facing west turns left (South) and runs for 30 min. and reach at point L .
so,
→ Distance covered by car B = S * T = 40 * (30/60) = 40 * (1/2) = 20 km .
then,
→ Vertical distance between points K and L = 38 + 20 = 58 km .
therefore,
→ The difference between the vertical and horizontal distances between the two points K and L = 383 - 58 = 325 km (Ans.)
