Two cars X and Y are positioned as shown at time t = 0. They are travelling in the same direction. X is 50m behind Y and has a constant velocity of 30ms–1. Y has a constant velocity of 20ms–1. X Y 30 m s–1 50 m 20 ms–1 What is the value of t when X is level with Y? A 1.0 s B 1.7s C 2.5s D 5.0s

Given :
Two cars X and Y are travelling in the same direction.
X is 50m behind Y
 X+50=Y-----(1)
Let T be the time
For Car A:
X speed has a constant velocity of 30ms–1
Speed=Distance/time
Distance=speedxtime
X=30T

For Car B:
Y has a constant velocity of 20ms–1
Distance=Y=20T

Substituting the value of x and y in equation 1
 we get:
30T+50=20T
10T=-50T=-5 sec
time cannot be negative.
Hence we can consider it as 5sec.

∴ The value of t =5sec when X is level with Y
