in very brief 
while you connect in series you will actually make twice the EMF value like in this case (E + É ) 
but whenever you connect in parallel you ‘re gonna increase the Amp-hr. value actually, what allows the cells last for a long while comparatively as well within voltage parameter of (E + É )/2…

there are couple of electrical appliances require to be operated underneath certain voltage parameter… like UPS service battery back up where the cells are connected in parallel way…
