Two Corporals by Val Henry Geilgud is a play where the writer uses his imagination where Adolf Hitler and Napolean Bonaparted meets, and what they would have spoken when they had met
Explanation:
- The story begins with Adolf Hitler (who is imagined alive here) going to Napoleon Bonaparte's grave and there he see that Napoleon Bonaparte's grave (coffin) has been made of Russian Granite. Hence, Hitler thinks that even after Napoleon's death, it his enemies who have buried him. Having come to see such a great man, Hitler salutes before Napoleon's grave. The moment he salutes, Napoleon's spirit comes out of the grave, and moment Hitler sees Napoleon's spirit, he feels so happy and proudly introduces himself as "Chancellor of German Empire".
- Napoleon too is happy seeing Hitler had come to see him (in his grave) despite being dead. And both of them sit to talk. Napoleon says Hitler that he find many things common between them. From being corporals in the army, with their efforts they went on to rule their respective nations. Further Napoleon says how Hitlers and his soldiers stood by them and were ready to sacrifice their lives for them. Both of the also proudly discuss about the nations they ruined and captured.
- Hitler claims that France, Poland, Norway and many other European nations i have destroyed and in just few more weeks, I would destroy England completely. Hearing this, Napoleon says, had he got the opportunity to take control of the English channel for 36 hours, he would taken England under his control, and I feel bad that I was unable to do. For which, Hitler says that not to worry, in few minutes his German Air Force would bomb the English channel and destroy it.
- Then Hitler says that it is matter only few days, after which the entire he would turn the entire European nations against England. Then both discuss they are gains and losses in the wars that they had fought. After that Hitler says that in time to come, each person would become a Hitler like him and he would change people like him. However, Napoleon says no nation can rule for long by making people their slaves and Napoleon says that he does not believe in that nor his intentions were that.
- Then it is shown some children speaking who had dies in the bomb that Hitler put and these children describe their sufferings. Then Hitler says that it is only Germany who is capable of ruling the entire world and being superior race only they can achieve such feat. This Hitler says he would prove it. However Napoleon says that one should not think that one person is superior than the other person. He says that he never realised this when he was alive (as he too thought he was superior than any other person), but now he understands this and regrets that when living he did not think about it, and says Hitler that he must not think that he is superior than anybody else in the world.
- However, Hitler ignores what Napoleon's says and say Napoleon that since he is jealous of him, he saying like this and that Napoleon could not achieve what Hitler has achieved and that soon he (Hitler) would be ruling the world, this fact is making Napoleon jealous of Hitler. Further, he says that which are the places that Napoleon was defeated those places (nations) Hitler would conquer. The play ends with Hitler calling his Army General and asking him to attack Russia
