two differences between compression and rarefaction

Compression                                                   Rarefaction

a region in a longitudinal (sound)                  a region in a longitudinal (sound)

wave where the particles are                        wave where the particles are

closest together.                                              furthest apart.

Compression happens when                       Rarefaction is just the opposite,

molecules are forced, or pressed,              it occurs when molecules are given

together.                                                       extra space and allowed to

                                                                       expand.
