Two elements with symbol X (atomic no. 16) and Y (atomic no.12) are placed in 3rd period the modern periodic table.
1) which among the two has more metallic character.
2) calculate the valency of each element.
3) Element 'Y' is smaller than 'X' in terms of atomic size. Is the statement true .Justify.

Y is more metallic as it will lose electrons.
valency for X
K L M
2 8 6 (ATOMIC NO. 16)
therefore it will gain 2 electons to fill its outer most shell
valency is -2

Valency for Y
K L M
2 8 2
therefore it will lose electrons
valency is 2
No the statement is not true...
X is smaller as it has more electrons in its outermost shell. as a result due to nuclear force of attraction the electrons in the element x would be more attracted towards the nucleus than that of element y. thus the size of element x is smaller...
