11
configuration of X-2,8,2 where valancy is 2
and of Y-2,8,6 where valancy is 2
hence,it forms ionic bond

According to the modern way of electron configuration (including the atomic orbitals of the electrons) the electronic configuration of the X and Y are,

1) The electronic configuration of X (12) is : 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2

On the other hand,

2) The electronic configuration of Y (16) is : 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p4

Now,we can see that the X can donate 2 electron from it's 3s orbital and Y can take 2 electrons in it's 3p orbital.

Which means they will form an ionic bond between them.
