Explanation:

according to the formula of 2n², element x (which has the atomic number of 12) has 2 electrons in it's outermost shell and element y (having the atomic number of 16) has 6 electrons in it's outermost shell. both the elements have 3 shells so they are the members of third period as periods indicate the number of shells. On the reaction, 2 electrons of element x will be completely transferred to element y to form ionic bond.

element x having the atomic number 12 is magnesium and element y having the atomic number of 16 is sulphur so their compound will be named as magnesium sulphide (MgS)
