(2/5) * x - (3/4) * x = 14

x(2/5 - 3/4) = 14

x(8 - 15/20) = 14

-7x/20 = 14

-7x = 280

x = -280/7

x = -40.


Verification:

(2/5) * -40 - (3/4) * -40 = 14

-16 -(-30) = 14

-16 + 30 = 14

14 = 14.
