Explanation:

Given Two lamps one rated 60 w at 220 v and the other 40 w at 220 v are connected in parallel to the electric supply at 220 v.

Draw a circuit diagram to show the connections.

Calculate the current drawn from the electric supply.

We know that

Power P1 = 60 W

Power P2 = 40 W

Also voltage V1 = V2 = 220 V

Power = V^2 / R

So R = V^2 / P

Now resistance R1 = V1^2 / P1

                               = (220)^2 / 60

                              = 48400 / 60

                              = 2420 / 3 ohms

Also resistance R2 = V2^2 / P2

                               = (220)^2 / 40

                                = 48400 /40

                                = 1210 ohms

Now both lamps are in parallel. We know that

1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2

1/R = 1/2420 / 3 + 1/1210

      = 3/2420 + 1/1210

     = 3 + 2 / 2420

    = 5/2420

    = 1/484

So R = 484 ohms

Therefore current I = V/R

                                 = 220 / 484

                                 = 55 / 121

                                  = 5 / 11 A

The current drawn from the electric supply is 5/11 A.
