Two men at a distance of 0.68 km from each other stand at the same distance from a vertical hillock. One of them fires a shot and the other hears it’s echo 3 s after hearing the direct sound. Find the distance of the men from the hillock assuming the velocity of the sound to be 340 metre per second.

Answer:

Total distance covered by the sound and its reflection = 2d

where d is the distance between vertical hillock and one of the man.

Time taken for the echo to be heard = 3 s

Let the speed of sound in air be 340 m/s.

We know , Speed = Distance /time

340 = 2d/ 3

d = 510 m
