let the number be x and y

Two number differ by 23

x - y = 23

x = 23 +y

twice the smaller number is17lessthan the greater number

so,

2y = x + 17

since x is 23 + y

2y = 23 + y +17

2y -y = 23+17

y = 40

x = 23 +y

= 40 + 23

= 63

so the numbers are 40 and 63
