Two numbers are 49% and 70% respectively of a third number . Find
a) what percent is the first number that of the second number
b)what percent is the second number that of the second number

Let the three numbers be x, y and z.

Then x is z + 20% of z = 100% of z + 20% of z = 120% of z = 120z100

Now y is z + 50% of z = 100% of z + 50% of z = 150% of z = 150z100

Thus required percentage

=12z1015z10×100

=12z10×1015z×100=12×10×10010×15×1

= 80

Thus the required percentage is 80%. First number is 80% of the second number.

It can be also be done in the following way. Let z = 100. Then x = 120 and y = 150. So the percentage is calculated as

120150×100=1215×100=80

Thus it is 80%
