Let the first number be x
Then, second number = 3x

Now, According to question,
Their sum is 240

 = > x + 3x = 240

 = > 4x = 240

 = > x = \frac{240}{4}

 = > x = 60

Then, first number = x = 60
Second number = 3x = 3 × 60 = 180

Now, their difference

= 180 - 60
= 120
