Answer :

Here, we are given the ratio of two number, i.e. 5 : 3 and the sum of the two numbers is also given. We need to calculate the smallest number. So, for that firstly we need to calculate both of the numbers. Firstly, we will assume the numbers as any variable according to the ratio given. And then on adding them and keeping them equal to their sum we will get the value of the variable. Then we can find both the numbers by substituting the value of the variable in it. And henceforth, we can find out the smallest number.

Solution :

Answer :

  • The smallest number is 30

Given :

• Ratio of two numbers = 5 : 3

• The sum of the two numbers = 80

  • Let the first number be 5x
  • Let the second number be 3x

According to the question,

⇒ First number + Second number = 80

⇒ 5x + 3x = 80

⇒ 8x = 80

⇒ x = 80/8

⇒ x = 10

The value of x = 10

Substituting the value of 'x' in the assumed numbers :

FIRST NUMBER :

⇒ First number = 5x

⇒ First number = 5(10)

First number = 50

SECOND NUMBER :

⇒ Second number = 3x

⇒ Second number = 3(10)

Second number = 30

Therefore, the second number is smaller than the first number by 20.
