Let the second number = x

Then, the first number = x+42

According to the Question, their average is 40.

So ,

Average = (Sum of both numbers)/2

 \frac{x + x + 42}{2} = 40 \\ \\ 2x + 42 = 80 \\ \\ 2x = 80 - 42 \\ \\ 2x = 38 \\ \\ x = \frac{38}{2} \\ \\ x = 19

If the second number is x = 19 , then the first number is = x+42 = 19+42 = 61.

The required numbers are 19 and 61.
