Assume final velocity is v
Final mass = 5 + 5 = 10 kg as they stick together
Conservation of momentum says that
Initial momentum = Final momentum
Initial momentum = 5x4 + 5x2 = 20 + 10 = 30 m/s ___(1)
(No need to take minus sign because momentum is the amount of motion possessed by body )
Final momentum = 10 v ___(2)
(1) = (2)
10 v = 30
v = 3 m/s
