Let Metal in first oxide = x

Oxygen in first oxide= y

Metal in first oxide= 50%

Ratio of metal : oxide = x:y = 1 : 1  ,  Formula given = MO2

Means 2 Oxygen have 50% contribution.

In second Oxide, Metal = 40%

So, Ratio of metal : oxygen = 40 : 60  = 2 : 3

i.e  M2O3

Answer according to the given question would be=  M2O3.

But, I think there is some mistake in question. The Formula given for the first oxide must be MO.

So that the formula of second oxide will be M2O3.
