Two pails of different sizes contain 34.5 liters of water altogether. When 0.68 liter of water is poured from the bigger pail into the smaller pail, the amount of water in the bigger pail is 9 times that in the smaller pail. How much water was there in each pail at first?

let at first time bigger pails have x litres and smaller pails have y litres of water .

according to question,

x + y = 34.5 ---------(1)

again,
x -0.68 = 9(y+ 0.68 )
x -9y =6.8 -------------(2)

solve equations (1) and (2)

10y = 34.5 -6.8
10y = 27.7
y = 2.77
put this in equation (1)
x = 34.5 -2.77 = 31.73

hence, at first time bigger pails have 31.73 litres and smaller pails have 2.77 litres
