In France the King divided the society of people in the kingdom in to 3 classes or estates.... 1st estate or Clergy (religious priests etc), 2nd estate or Nobles (rich, noble people, brave fighters), 3rd estate..

All common people amounting to about 98% of the population are classified as part of 3rd estate. They are the lower class. They had very few rights.
