and ν 2 respectively.

By conservation of momentum, we get m(2ν)

2 m(−ν)=m(ν 1 )+2m(ν )

or 0=mν

1 +2mν

2or ν 1 +2ν 2 =0

and since the collision is elastic,

ν 2 −ν 1 =2ν−(−ν)

or ν 2 −ν 1 =3ν

Solving the above two equations, we get

ν 2 =ν and ν 1

=−2ν

That is, mass 2m returns with velocity ν while mass m returns with velocity 2ν in the direction.
