Question :---- we have to Find Time of each pipe to fill the tank ...

Given :----

  • both can fill it in = 6 H , 40 min = 6(40/60) = 20/3 hours
  • one pipe take 3 hours less than other pipe to fill .

Solution :-------

Let both pipes be A and B ,

Here efficiency of A > B,

so, Let A takes = X hours to Fill the tank

than B takes = (x+3) hours to fill the tank ,

both will fill in

1/x + 1/(x+3) Hours to fill the tank.

A/q, now,

1/x + 1/x+3 = 3/20

Lets try to solve this now , by taking lcm of denominator ,

 \frac{1}{x} + \frac{1}{x + 3} = \frac{3}{20} \\ \\ \frac{x + 3 + x}{ {x }^{2} + 3x } = \frac{3}{20} \\ \\ 3 {x}^{2} + 9x = 40x + 60 \\ \\ 3 {x}^{2} - 31x - 60 = 0 \\ \\ x = \frac{ - b + \sqrt{ {b}^{2} - 4ac } }{2a} \\ \\ x = \frac{31 + \sqrt{ {31}^{2} - 4 \times 3 \times - 60 } }{2 \times 3} \\ \\ x = 12

So , pipe A will fill the tank in = 12 hours

pipe B will fill the tank in = 12+3 = 15 hours ...

(Hope it helps you)
