Answer:time taken by the faster pipe is 20mins and time taken by the slower pipe is 25mins

Step-by-step explanation:let the time taken by the faster pipe to fill the cistern be x mins

and the therefore the time taken by the slower pipe to fill the cistern is 5+x mins

let the total work done be 1

so, in 1min the faster pipe fills=1/x part of the cistern

  and in 100/9 mins it fills=100/9x part of the cistern

also,in 1min the slower pipe fills=1/(x+5)part of the cistern

  and in 100/9 mins it fills=100/9(x+5) part of the cistern

therefore, 100/9x + 100/9(x+5)=1

=>1/x+1/(x+5)=9/100

=>2x+5/x^2+5x=9/100

=>200x+500=9x^2+45x

=>9x^2-155x-500=0

=>9x^2-180x+25x-500=0

=>9x(x-20)+25(x-20)=0

+(x-20)(9x+25)

 so,x=20  or  -25/9

since time cannot be in negative , thus x=20mins

and x+5=25mins
