Answer:

Two pipes takes 3 minutes and 36 seconds =3+36÷60=3.6 minutes

let, x min be taken by one pipe to fill 1 part of cistern

To fill 1 part first pipe takes x minute

therefore, to fill 1 part of other pipe takes (x-3) min

To fill (1÷2) part first pipe takes 2x minutes

and to fill (1÷2) part of other pipe takes 2(x-3)=2x-6 min

therefore, together two pipes takes to fill the cistern = 2x+2x-6 =4x-6 min

A.T.Q 4x-6=3.6

=>4x =3.6+6=9.6

=>x=9.6÷4

=>x=2.4

Then the time taken by the faster pipe to fill the cistern alone is 2.4 minutes.
