Given :

Magnitude of first charge (q₁) = 1μC

Magnitude of second charge (q₂) = 4μC

Distance between charges = 3m

To Find :

The position at which net electric field between the charges is zero

Solution :

  • Let the point be at a distance of X from the first charge
  • As the net electricfield is zero the electric field produced by two charges should be equal

                   E₁ = E₂

  • kq₁/r₁²  =  kq₂/r₂²
  • 1/x²   =  4/(3-x)²
  • (3-x)² / x²  = 4
  • (3-x) / x  = 2
  • 3-x = 2x
  • 3x = 3
  • x = 1m

The electric field is zero at a distance of 1m from the 1μC charged particle
