The deterioration of the environment or environmental degradation occurs when resources like air, soil and water are depleted, or the ecosystems or habitats are destroyed. Environmental degradation also occurs when wildlife becomes extinct and there is pollution.

To a large extent, human beings are responsible for this degradation. They dump the garbage in the water bodies and cause water pollution. They cause air pollution by using vehicles which use petroleum and emit gases. When they burn fossil fuels, use harmful sprays on plants, or cut down trees they cause harm to the environment.

Human beings are responsible for environmental degradation in many ways. Two such ways man contributes towards this problem are:

# Using non-recyclable materials – Instead of using things made of materials like paper which can be recycled to produce new items, people tend to use plastic products. This is not recyclable and when burnt is harmful to the environment.

# Land/air pollution – The best example of this is during festivals. As part of the celebrations, people burn a lot of crackers. The papers on the crackers are strewn all over the place while the noise level is often above tolerable levels. Moreover, the smoke from the crackers plays a key role in contributing to air pollution.
