two room heaters are marked 220v,500w and 220v,800w respectively.If the heaters are connected in parallel to 220v main supply, Calculate:

(i)the current drawn by each heater.

(ii)the resistance of each heater.

(iii)total electric energy consumed in commercial units if they operate simultaneously for 2 hours

The solutions of following parts are as follows:

Explanation:

It is given that,

Power of heater 1, P_1=500\ W

Power of heater 2, P_2=800\ WVltage, V = 220 V

In parallel combination, potential difference across each resistors remains the same.

1. Power is given by:

P=V\times I

Room heater 1,

I_1=\dfrac{P_1}{V}

I_1=\dfrac{500}{220}

I_1=2.27\ A

Room heater 2,

I_2=\dfrac{P_2}{V}

I_2=\dfrac{800}{220}

I_2=3.63\ A

2. Ohm's law,

V=IR

For heater 1,

R_1=\dfrac{V}{I_1}

R_1=\dfrac{220}{2.27}

R_1=96.91\ \Omega

For heater 2,

R_2=\dfrac{V}{I_2}

R_2=\dfrac{220}{3.63}

R_2=60.6\ \Omega

3. Total electric energy consumed in commercial units if they operate simultaneously for 2 hours is,

E=(500+800)\times 2

E = 2600 Wh

or

E = 2.6 kWh
