sum of the area of the two squares is 655cm²

So,

we can also write it as,

(x)² + (x + 4)² = 655

x² + x² + (4)² + 2(x)(4) = 655

2x² + 16 + 8x = 655

2x² + 8x = 655 - 16

2x² + 8x = 639

2x² + 8x - 639 = 0

By using quadratic formula,

x = [b ± √(b² - 4ac)]/2a

x = [8 ± √((8)² - 4×2×639)]/2×2
