Two stretched strings give 3 beats per second. The
frequency of one of them is 440 Hz. (a) What are
possible frequencies of the other string? (b) What
is the possible frequency of the other string, if on
increasing the tension of this string the frequency of
beats decreases?

Answer:

The frequency of tuning fork, n

f

=512Hz

Beat frequency, x=4beats/sec

The beat frequency decreases to 2 beats per second, when the tension in the piano string is slightly increased.

We have to find the frequency of the piano, n

p

We have the equation,

n

p

=n

f

−x=512−4=508Hz

When tension is increased the frequency also increased. As number of beats decreased, the frequency of string must be less than 512 Hz.

Hence the correct answer is 508 Hz.
