Two thin woollen sweaters are warmer than a thick woollen sweater because there is a layer of air between them that doesn't allow our body heat to escape but it also it doesn't absorbs heat from the atmosphere and wool is also an insulator that itself doesn't allow our body heat to escape. So what is the actual reason behind it?

Wool is of course an insulator that doesn't allow the heat to escape, but this is also applicable for the thicker woollen sweater which doesn't give warmth as much as the thinner ones. So, a more justifiable answer is that the layer of air between the two thinner sweaters doesn't allow our body heat to escape.
