 \textbf{ \underline { \underline{TO REDUCE FRICTION }}}

Due to roughness of surfaces, any process which makes the contact surface smooth will reduce friction .

 \textbf{By Polishing - }

Polishing a rough surface smoothens it and reduces frictions.

 \textbf{By lubrication - }

Friction is decreased by lubricating surfaces with oil, grease or graphite. The sliding surfaces than have a thin layer of the lubricant between them. The friction is then much less.

➡ Graphite is used as a lubricant in machines where the moving parts reach very high temperatures.

➡ While playing carrom, you put fine talcum powder on the carrom board to reduce friction.

 \textbf{By using \: ball \: bearing - }

We no that we can reduce friction by using wheels. A suitcase with wheels can be pushed easily. Use of ball bearings in moving parts of machines reduces friction. Ball bearing are used between hubs and axles of ceiling fans and bicycles.

 \textbf{By streamlining - }

The resistance offered by fluid is the minimum when the shape of a body is streamlined.

➡ We know that the bodies of birds and fishes have streamlined shape to reduce friction with the air and water respectively.

➡ The shape of racing case, boats and aeroplanes are so designed that is, streamlined, to reduce friction so that the resistance offered to their movement is less.
