Two years ago a father was five times as old as his son . Two years later his age will be 8 more than three times the age of his son .Fine the present ages of the father and son .

Let us assume, the present age of father and son is x years and y years respectively.

 Given:

Two years ago,

x – 2 = 5 (y – 2)

x – 2 = 5y – 10

5y – x = 8 ---------------1

Also given:

Two years later,

x + 2 = 3 (y + 2) + 8

x + 2 = 3y + 6 + 8

x + 2 = 3y + 14

x – 3y = 12 --------------2

 Adding equation 1 and equation 2

2y = 20

y = 10

substitute the value of y in equation 1

5 * 10 – x = 8

50 – x = 8

 x = 42

The present age of father is 42 years and present age of son is 10 years.
