EXPLANATION.

  • GIVEN

Two years ago a man was six times as old as

his son,

18 years,he will be twice as old as his son.

To find their present ages.

According to the question,

Let the present age of man = x years.

Let the present age of son = y years.

Two years ago a man was six times as old as his son.

=> x - 2 = 6 ( y - 2 )

=> x - 2 = 6y - 12

=> x - 6y = -10 .....(1)

In 18 years, he will be twice as old as his son.

=> x + 18 = 2 ( y + 18 )

=> x + 18 = 2y + 36

=> x - 2y = 18 ......(2)

From equation (1) and (2) we get,

=> -4y = -28

=> y = 7

Put the value of y = 5 in equation (1)

we get,

=> x - 6y = -10

=> x - 6(7) = -10

=> x - 42 = -10

=> x = 32

Therefore,

age of father = x = 32 years.

age of son = y = 7 years.
