Two years ago, John’s father was 5 times as old as John. Two years later, John’s father’s age will be 8 years more than three times John’s age. Find the present ages of John and his father.

john's father's age  =  5x-2

 

two years later john's age  =  x+2

john's father's age  =  8+3x+2

5x-2 + x-2

= 6x - 4

8+3x+2 + x+2

=4x + 12

4x+12  = 6x-4+2

-2x = 10

x = 5
