let current sum of ages be S
total number of people = 4
total age gap in 2 years = 2 x 4 = 8 years
given, S - 8 = 40 => S = 48 years
total age gap in 3 years = 3 x 4 = 12 years
hence sum of their ages after 3 years = S + 12 => 48 + 12 = 60 years
