There are mainly four types of coal; peat, lignite, bituminous and anthracite.
Peat: it is formed from the decaying vegetation and is considered to be the precursor of coal.
Lignite: it is formed from compressed peat and is often reffered to as brown coal. It is low ranking highly volatile coal.
Bituminous: it is dense, sedimentary rock which is usually black in colour but sometimes become dark brown.
Anthracite: it is highest rank of coal. It is hard, black and as a natural smokeless fuel it is used primarily for residential and commercial space heating.
