On the basis of presence or absence or type of pigment plastid is classified into three parts

1. Chromoplast - They contain different types of fat soluble pigment like Carotene and Xanthophyll. This type of plastid is present in pericarp of fruits and petals of flowers.Red colour of tomato is due to lycopene of chromoplast.

2. Chloroplast- This type of plastid is present in green part of plants. It helps in trapping sunlight so they help in the process of photosynthesis due to presence of Chlorophyll + Carotenoid pigment in it.

3. Leucoplast - They are colourless plastid. It is generally present in the non green part of the underground plant. The main function of this plastid is to store food in the form of starch, fat or oil and protein.
