A compound is when two or more different atoms are chemically bonded to each other through a chemical reaction, and can only be separated through another chemical reaction or through using a large amount of energy. Two example would be water or salt. With water, you have 2 hydrogen atoms bonded to an oxygen atom. With salt, you have a sodium atom bonded with a chlorine atom. In either case, the compounds cannot be easily broken apart to their parent atoms.

A solution on the other hand is when two different elements or compounds are mixed together, but not chemically bonded. An example of this would be saltwater. Salt and water are mixed, but are not chemically bonded, and can easily be separated.
