The ultrastructure of the mitochondria is composed of the following parts:

Explanation:

  • An outer phospho-lipid membrane.
  • An inter-membrane space.
  • An inner phospho-lipid membrane.
  • The inner phospholipid membrane is folded into finger-like projections called the Cristae.
  • F1 particles also called ATP synthase responsible for synthesising ATP (adenosine triphosphate) which remains attached to the surface of the cristae.
  • Matrix located inside the mitochondrial inner membrane.
  • Mitochondrial DNA.
  • Mitochondrial Ribosomes.
