Mitochondria - Turning on thePowerhouse. Mitochondria are known as the powerhouses of the cell. They are organelles that act like a digestive system which takes in nutrients, breaks them down, and creates energy rich molecules for the cell. The biochemical processes of the cell areknown as cellular respiration.

- Mitochondria posses oxysomes on it's inner membrane. These oxysomes takes active part in synthesis of ATP molecules.
- During cellular respiration, ATP molecules are produced and get accumulated in the mitochondria.
- They play an important role in cellular activities.
- Only mitochondria can convert pyruvate into carbon dioxide and water during cell respiration.
- Therefore, mitochondria are called as 'power house of cell'.
