Passage Based Questions
1. Read the passage given below and answer the following questions :
(1x4=4 Marks)
Molecular nitrogen N2 comprises about 78% by volume of earth's atmosphere. It occurs as
sodium nitrate, NaNO3 (chile saltpetre) and potassium nitrate, KNO3 (Indian saltpetre) in
earth's crust. Since, nitrates are very soluble in water, so these are not wide spread in the
earth's crust. Nitrogen is also an important constituent of amino acids, prcteins and nucleic
acids in plants and animals.
Behaviour of nitrogen is different from rest of the elements because of the followng reasons
(i) Smaller size, high ionisation enthalpy, high electronegativity and absence of d-orbital.
(ii) It has a unique ability to form pre-pr multiple bonds with itseif and with small sized atoms
like C and O as they have small size and high electronegativity. Heavier elements of this
group do not form pri-pn bonds as their atomic orbitals are so large and diffuse that they
cannot have effective overlapping.
Thus, nitrogen exists as a diatomic molecule (N2) with a triple bond (N=N). Consequently, its
bond enthalpy (941.4 kJ mo!!) is very high. P, As and Sb form only single bonds as P-P,
As-As and Sb-Sb. Due to high bond enthalpy N is much less reactive than P.
