The northem and north western parts of Rajasthan
have undergone a major change. This part of the
state is now a fertile area and wheat, maize, bajra,
Jowar, sugar cane, rice and fruits are grown here.
After independence, a major project was started to
divert the water of river Beas into river Satluj. At the
confluence of these two rivers at Harike Patan, a
barrage was constructed. The famous Indira Gandhi
Canal starts from here. This canal provides water to
western Rajasthan, making this desert region a fertile
ogricultural land
