Question statement:

Which flowers had been fighting for the highest place of honour? Who were  the supporters of the two competing flowers?

Answer:

The lily and the rose have been rivals for many years and were fighting for the highest place of honour.

It's been a great dispute between these two flowers.

Both these flowers gather support and want to stand out among their "flower-factions,".

The poet never gives support or any particular remarks about the species of flower on either side of this power struggle.
