In unicellular organisms the entire body of the organism is in contact with the environment hence exchange of materials can take place but, in multicellular organisms the entire body of the organism is not in contact with the environment and hence simple diffusion is not helpful. A reason is that multicellular organisms need special organs for exchange of gases with the environment because of prokaryotic cells found in the body. The cells are not in contact with the environment and therefore diffusion would not work in the exchange of gases. The organs in the body therefore serve this purpose.
