The two can be distinguished by subjecting them to the flame. Saturated hydrocarbons generally give a clear flame while unsaturated hydrocarbons give a yellow flame with lots of black smoke.

ANSWER :

We can distinguish ethane from ethene by subjecting these hydrocarbons to a flame.

METHOD -

Bring the given hydrocarbons one by one near to the flame.

IDENTIFICATION -

If the hydrocarbon when brought near to the flame produces a clear type of flame, then it will be confirmed that the hydrocarbon is saturated, that is, it is ethane.

And if the hydrocarbon produces a yellow colored fla0me with black smokes when subjected to the flame, then the hrydrocarbon is unsaturated, that means, it is ethene.
