We can determine valency of nitrogen by calculating its oxidation state in the compound. The valency will be equal to oxidation to state. Oxygen shows oxidation state of –2
Lets assume oxidation of nitrogen be x
2x + 5 x(-2) = 0
This gives x = 5
The valency of nitrogen in N205 will be 5
