Shi Huangdi died in 210 BCE. There was a series of peasant rebellions after his death. Though Shi Huangdi’s son and nephew became the second and third emperors of the Qin Dynasty, both soon lost power. Qin power ended officially in 206 BCE.
By 202 BCE, an illiterate peasant leader by the name of Liu Pang had risen to power. This marked the beginning of the Han dynasty.
As a young man, Liu Pang worked as a police officer. When Shi Huangdi died, he became a rebel leader. He was a skillful general during the civil war that marked the end of the Qin.
As emperor, Liu Pang used some of the same policies as the Qin dynasty. However, he also changed some of the harsh policies that he rebelled against. He reduced taxes on peasants. He eased Legalist policies. He appointed Confucian scholars as his advisors. His actions built a strong base for the Han dynasty.
