easiest way is to calculate area of individual rectangles bottom to up.
the breadth will be same i.e. 0.5m and length will reduce by 1 m as 0.5 is reduced from both sides
so
3.5 * 0.5 + 2.5 * 0.5 + 1.5* 0.5 + 0.5*0.5
1.75 + 1.25 + 0.75 + 0.25
= 4m²

so

1.75 + 1.25 + 0.75 + 0.25
