l walked up the stairs in the balcony, hearing  footsteps which sounded like someone hammering.

I looked around but couldn't see any stuff hammering.

Then I stopped walking, suddenly hammering sound was not there.

After a deep thinking I came to the conclusion that it was my own step sound.
